International Theatre Workshops: Thoo Mweh Khee Migrant Learning Center
Every August brings the members of The Radium Girls Productions to the Thoo Mweh Khee Migrant Learning Center in Pho Pra, Thailand. A beautiful community made up of the Karen people, Burmese refugees who are hungry to continue their education and create opportunities for themselves and the people of their villages. We are building relationship, self confidence, alternative learning as well as an opportunity for the kids of the community to share their voices through original performance.
The days consisted of Drama classes, where we helped the students recreate classic Karen stories, combining their traditional folklore with modern takes, using ensemble building, voice and diction training , music and improv to help bring these mini productions to life.
The real heart and soul of our trip is to work with the young women of the community on their self image, empowering them in a society where a woman's voice is easily shrouded by the man's. Teaching these young women that they are capable of greatness no matter where they are from, their socioeconomic background and especially their gender.
